my first experiment

okay so last night i downloaded the one month trial version of after effects, i thought if i download it i can start to use it while im getting the money together to buy the full program. i watched a couple of tutorials to get an idea of how to use the program and then spent about 6 hours having a go at making my own video. its only about a minute long and i only did the first verse and chorus but i thought there was no point spending time doing the full song now ive got a good idea of how to use the program. I am pretty pleased with this experiment and now i need to choose an artist and 2 of their songs to focus on and create a kinetic typography video for each one. I have soo much music in my itunes library its impossible for me to just choose a song so i am going to ask people on facebook and ask friends for song or artist recommendations and hopefully by next week i will have chosen some songs and started working on them. at the moment i am really pleased with how much i have managed to get done already, by this time on the last project i had only just started my research.

actually had a go at making my own .... here is my first attempt

another 2010 d&ad entry

Here is another example of a past students work, this brand communications work came in 2nd place.
same as the builders tea the design is quite simple but its the idea that makes this work stand out.

builders tea winner 2010

i have decided to look back at some past winners work to help me get an idea of what d&ad are looking for.
These images won for the builders tea brief last year and a controversial approach might be a good way to go, to get the attention of the judges.

typographic posters

just some examples of typographic posters i have found during my research, some are amazingly designed and the others are amazing ideas

The Beatles - Help! Kinetic Typography

initial ideas

i've still not decided whether to do the umbro or diesel brief but i have had some thoughts about each brief.

Umbro.

the idea of the brief is that umbro are famous for their football boots but these are only for 90 minutes a day so for the other 1350 minutes a day they want to encourage people to wear their leisure footwear.

the first idea i have came up with is a typographic poster/billboard that uses type, possibly combined with an image or illustration to say things like ... 'you wouldn't leave you're toothbrush in you're mouth all day so don't leave you're football boots on after the game'.

i think the wording needs to be played around with to make it sounds more powerful but keep the idea.
there are lots of different examples to use some more controversial than others ... e.g. you wouldn't leave the condom on after you've had sex ... with d&ad the more controversial is usually better.

Diesel.

The idea of the diesel brief is to illustrate 2 songs by an artist in an interesting way.
Im not that great at traditional illustration or drawings but i thought of taking another approach.

I have been looking at some kinetic typography videos on youtube and have been really inspired and i am thinking about learning to use flash and creating my own kinetic typography video to go along with each song. i think this could be hard to learn and very time consuming but it is something i have wanted to learn how to do for a while so i thought this would be a good opportunity.

LA billboards

The greatest way to break up with..a city...on a billboard

I love these typographic billboards.
Creative Jon Jackson is leaving LA for New York and decided to announce the end of the relationship via 5 billboards. Luckily a friend of his works for CBS outdoor, so three weeks later his breakup notes are in large format in 5 locations around town until Jan 15th 2011.
“Really I do love you LA & I have the t-shirt to prove it. However that love is just not strong enough to keep me living in your ever sprawling arms. I wanted to make sure you got the message I left on Lincoln BLVD just south of Washington. It is big and brown like your air in the summertime.
Adios LA.”
“You know New York and I work together, and we just get along. I know this is superficial but NY has much bigger seasons, and they are real. Keep in touch.”
Hilarious!

Briefs

Ive had a chance to look at this years D&AD competition briefs and at first none of them really inspired me but after a couple of days ive narrowed my choices down to the umbro (open advertising) brief and the diesel (illustration) brief. Ive started brainstorming a few ideas and hopefully ill have a good idea to start working on in the next few days.
